Title: Statues and Rule of Life of the Society of the Mission Priests of St. John the Evangelist, Cowley
Date: 1874-1977
Description: Records relating to the Statutes and the Rule of Life of the Society. The Statutes were the control mechanism for the Society and would include a statement laying out the objectives of the Society. They also provide details of the expectations placed upon members of the Society, for example the likelihood of being sent abroad on Missionary Work, and sets down regulations by which the Society and its members are governed. The Rule of Life outlines the expectations placed upon Professed Fathers, later this included Brothers, in terms of how they are expected to live their lives, particularly with regard to the vows, chastity, poverty and obedience, and the the undertking of mental prayer and upholding silence. Over time amendments were made to both the Statue and Rule, and on each occasion a new version would be printed, with a copy given to each member.
