Air Chief Marshal Sir Ronald Ivelaw-Chapman GCB KBE DFC AFC

Ts extracts from his memoirs (45pp), written in 1972, relating to his RFC (and RAF) career and his wartime experiences, including his training and service in France in 1918 with No. 10 Squadron RFC (later RAF) on artillery observation duties; his duties at the Experimental Establishment at RAF Martlesham Heath, Suffolk (1922-1926); service with No. 70 Squadron RAF at Hinaidi, Iraq (1928-1930) including his contribution to the evacuations by air from Kabul in 1929; his service during the Second World War in the Air Ministry for a brief period and command of a number of RAF bases before being shot down while on a bomber raid over France (May 1944) and, although initially evading capture with the assistance of the French Resistance, as a prisoner of war in Germany for the remainder of the war.
