Description (What the record is about)
-
The parish was formerly part of St Mary's, Old Town. The church, which was designed by H Ewan Rumble, was consecrated on 23 September 1869. It was enlarged in 1896, and the present tower was built in 1911 as part of a further enlargement scheme; the architect was A R G Fenning. The church, apart from the tower, was destroyed by a bomb on 4 May 1942. The records were saved by Jehu Smith, the sexton (for further information see PAR317/7/3/4).
Services then took place in the parish hall until 11 Apr 1957, when the new church, designed by Alexander E Matthew, was consecrated. A southern extension including a meeting room and kitchen opened in 1969.
For further information concerning the history of the church see PAR317/7/3/5, and ACC 7694, which contains an account of Charles Jewell's involvement with the extension of the church.
