Description (What the record is about)
-
If Mr. William Dix, cheese warehouse-keeper, did not immediately level that part of the ground beside the Walls opposite Smith's Walk lately broken up there without consent of the Corporation, an action of trespass was to be brought at the expense of the Corporation on the advice of the Recorder.
Upon reading the petition of Mr. Thomas Griffith, one of the Council, for ground to extend the frontage of his intended buildings in place of a house or houses in Watergate Street next to the Cross which he was pulling down, and if he ever purchased Mr. Timothy Leftwiche's right to the stalls in the Row and the shops underneath intermixed with the old houses and the intended new buildings then he would alter the steps at the end of Watergate Row to end in Bridge Street fronting the Cross and slope off the corner of the end buildings on the ground floor (up to the Row) leading out of Bridge Street into Watergate Street (ZA/B/4/212) to make the turning less sharp and dangerous (as shown on the plan), a grant was so made.
Upon the petition of John Goostrey, present occupier of the Exchange Assembly room and of the subscribers to the Exchange Assembly, it was ordered he have a lease of the Exchange Assembly room with the kitchen, vaults, shops and rooms in his occupation by an order of the last Assembly, for seven years from 25th March at £35 yearly rent payable half yearly with provision for the Mayor to use the same for Corporate entertainments (ZA/B/4/212v) and with a proviso that the majority of subscribers to the dancing assembly at the Exchange room may appoint other tenants by writing if they certify in writing any complaint against John Goostrey and shall give security to the Corporation for payment of any arrears of rent. John Goostrey was to act as trustee for the subscribers to the Assembly.
The Mayor (because of the great quantity of disbanded soldiers and sailors applying to him for relief on their way through the City) was to be allowed a further £4 to disburse during his mayoralty in charity, to be paid him by the Treasurer above the £8 usually allowed for poor passengers.
An Ejectment was to be brought against the occupiers of several cottages and gardens without Northgate belonging to the Hospital of St. John Baptist, ordered to be leased by the City to John Wheawell and Ellen Chapman to recover possession of the same in right of re-entry for non-payment of rent.
