Description (What the record is about)
-
This series consists of accessions registers of the British Museum (Natural History) Department of Zoology.
In 1837 a number of resolutions were passed by a Parliamentary Select Committee, which had been set up to investigate the condition, management and affairs of the British Museum. Resolution no.14 recommended that every new accession should be registered by the head of each department. The Zoological Department began an Accessions Register the same year.
Pieces 1-3 include accessions for all the Zoological collections, whereas pieces 4-8 cover vertebrate collections only: pieces 4-6 Mammalia, Aves, Reptilia and Pisces; pieces 7-8 Mammalia, Reptilia and Pisces and pieces 9-32 Mammalian only. Pieces 19-29 and 32 are computer-generated printouts.
Piece 33 is a register from Tring, incorporated into the Mammal Section accession registers in 1939. The specimens are also listed in the relevant accession register but this volume retains original references and comments on the state of repair of the specimens.
