Administrative / biographical background

Charles Gilbert became an articled clerk to Richard Watts of Lewes c1755, and then became his partner until Michaelmas 1775. His brother Nicholas (1734-1797) was also a lawyer as was his father Nicholas (1706-1774) and great grandfather Thomas (1634-1704). The latter was probably in partnership with his nephew Thomas Willard (1654-1733) who was succeeded in the firm at Eastbourne by Charles' father and then his elder brother. In 1773 John Hoper (1759-1845) joined Charles Gilbert as his articled clerk, by [? 1783] had become his partner and married Sarah Cossum of Hastings, younger sister of Anne, the wife of Charles' brother Thomas.
