The reference F was used by the Sussex Archaeological Society as a mnemonic reference for the listing of documents transferred by Frere and Company of London, solicitors, via the British Records Association in 1931. Further transfers by the association were given the references FA and FB as a means of continuing the same reference. On the transfer of the Society's collections of documents to ESRO in 1982 the references were altered to SAS/F, FA and FB.
