Catalogue of the Sheriffs of England and Wales from the reign of Henry II to that of George I. Arranged by counties and including London and Middlesex. Mainly complete to 1715, with some additions to 1722. Inserted loose (now numbered ff. 158-9) are lists of escheators, recorders, chamberlains and justices of Chester. In the hand of William Polhill (c.1648-1722), B.A. Oxon 1669, Vicar of Willingdon, Sussex, 1673-78, Rector of Bowers Gifford, Essex, to 1722 and Vicar of Bishop's Stortford, Hertfordshire 1698-1722. A monumental inscription at St. Michael, Bishop's Stortford, says of him: 'Theologiae artium et scientiarum studiosissimus exegit sibi ex eruditis laboribus monumentum'. Immediate source of acquisition (When and where the record was acquired from)
- The volume appears to have been owned first by another member of the Polhill family. On the front pastedown is '?- Polhill August the 7 bought this at...' At f. 140a are accounts for rent paid by James Polhill 1682-3. At f. 147v are undated accounts of rent received. At f. 157v is a note of a loan made in 1682. None of these is in the hand of William Polhill. In his will proved in the Prerogative Court of Canterbury in 1722, William Polhill bequeathed his manuscripts and collections to his nephew Robert Polhill, but, if the latter was not to be educated as a clergyman, then to Sion College (National Archives, PROB 11/584; copy in Lambeth Palace Library: MS Facsimile 14). Transferred from Sion College to Lambeth Palace Library in 1996.
