Administrative / biographical background

Charles Wade founded the initial Wade company in 1871 with the main focus of the business being the supply of riveted iron girders to the building trade, which progressed to structural steelwork. Wade and Dorman Long formed a joint company in 1908 (registered in 1909) as Dorman Long looked to forge international trade links, with offices and fabricating shops also being set up in Argentina (British Structural Steel). Wade and Dorman had branches in Cape Town and Johannesburg, with the head office in Durban.

In March 1937 the Company changed its name to Dorman Long (Africa) Limited and increased its capital to 400,000 £1 shares.
