Description

Nearly all the documents in this collection relate to the Enbrook estate (abt 90a) in Sandgate. The nucleus of the estate was a house called Belle Vue and 19a. conveyed to the fourth Earl of Darnley in 1806. The Earl's son, Sir John Duncan Bligh lived on the estate and made small additions to it during the late nineteenth century.

Administrative / biographical background

Sir John bequeathed a life interest in the estate to his daughter, Elizabeth Mary, Countess of Chichester, and on her death in 1912, the estate passed to his great nephew, Ludovick Edward Bligh, of Cumbria House, Minehead, Somerset. Most of the documents date from the period of the death of Sir John Bligh, 1872, to the death of L. E. Bligh's widow, 1925
