Description (What the record is about)
-
At the back of the volume are pages of verses, religious quotations (mostly Old Testament) and prayers, many of which have been crossed out; at the front is a list of women from classical mythology with a precis of their qualities, evidence of Classical Reception. The first document in the volume is dated 2 October 15 ER [=2 October 1572], most are undated but there is a later one dated 1577. There is no firm evidence of a connection with the Salters’ Company but the Salters’ clerks in early 17th century were scriveners and had assistants, named in Salters’ Company title deeds, suggesting that they may well have had clients outside the Company. Also, a 17th century Salters’ Beadle, Robert Prick, was also a publisher and translator – perhaps it belonged to him . Beadle’s duties in those days were wide-reaching and included some clerical work.
