Land tax could be redeemed for a money payment by contracting with the tax commissioners, under an act of 1798. Sometimes part of the land was sold to raise the money. This could, however, be done only with the approval of the tax commissioners and, in the case of ecclesiastical land, with the agreement of the bishop. Consent was given provided the sale did not materially affect the remaining property. A register was kept of those contracting to redeem land tax. Copies of conveyances were enrolled with the clerk of the Peace.
