INTRODUCTION

This, the fourth volume of Additional Manuscripts(Add Mss), has in general been compiled on the lines indicated in the Introduction to the first, but the impending publication of the Catalogue of Sussex Maps has now eliminated the need to list the more important maps and surveys in detail, and only brief details of date and property have therefore been given

Once again there are a large number of deeds of title but there will also be found maps and plans (e.g. Add Mss1802, 1830-1837, 1931-1935, 1980-2014), court rolls and other records of the Manor of Brimfast and Fishers in North Mundham (Add Mss1735-1801), papers and accounts relating to the Butt family of Tillington and Littlehampton, and designs for a bridge over the river Arun at Littlehampton (Add Mss1591-1605), documents of Commissioners of Sewers for the rape of Arundel (Add Mss1580-1588), architectural drawings of Chichester Cathedral (Add Mss1850-1861), letters from Bishop Gilbert of Chichester to Archdeacon Hare of Lewes (Add Mss1867-1869) and a photograph of a letter written from Constantinople during the Crimean War (Add Mss1528). The documents range in date from a court roll of the Manor of Brimfast and Fishers, 1446 (Add Mss1735) to the minute book of the Chichester branch of the English Association, 1946-1952 (Add Mss1715)

Students are again asked to exercise care in quoting references, and to use the form indicated in the Introduction to the first volume
