Administrative / biographical background

The estate was put on the market by the nephew of the Duchess of Cleveland in 1901. As a result, Sir Augustus Webster was able to buy back the estate which had been sold by his father, also called Augustus, to Harry Vane, later Duke of Cleveland, in 1857.
