On the opening of an enemy attack he organised the machine gun defence of part of the line personally placing the guns in position under very heavy shell fire. He also collected and rallied a number of stragglers. Later on, in charge of six guns, he covered a retirement over a river, doing excellent work, and inspiring his men by his courage.;
