Administrative / biographical background

William Beach, son of Thomas Beach and Jane Harding of Fittleton and Keevil, and grandson of William Beach and Ann [nee Wither] his wife, married his cousin Ann Wither in 1746. He bought the Netheravon estate in 1760, and in order to distinguish him from the other William Beaches in the family, he is referred to as "William Beach of Netheravon" throughout the catalogue

William and Ann had children as follows: William Wither Beach (1747-1829), James Harding Beach (born and died 1748), Ann Beach (1749-1771), Frances Beach (born and died 1752), JaneBeach (born and died 1754), Thomas Harding Beach (born and died 1758), and Henrietta Maria Beach (1760-1837, later Henrietta Maria Hicks Beach). However, only three survived to adulthood: William Wither, Ann and Henrietta Maria. However, it was Henrietta Maria, the youngest, who inherited, for William Wither became insane, and Ann was disinherited for marrying the curate at Keevil (Wiltshire), William Wainhouse. According to Wainhouse's version of events [see D2455/F2/5/3/4 for a narrative written by Wainhouse telling his side of the story], Ann was kept prisoner in a room over the porch at Keevil Manor by her parents, who did not approve of her choice of husband; she and William tried to elope but were caught. Once Ann turned twenty-one she and William were married, but her health was poor and she died the following year; her parents refused to visit her on her deathbed [see D2455/F2/5/1/22-23 for correspondence between Wainhouse and his parents-in-law]
