The Langtons were a Leicestershire family who succeeded to the Borough of Newton-in-Makerfield through intermarriage in the 14th century with the Banastie family, firsts Barons of Newton. Low Hall, Hindley, by 1910 a farmhouse, and used as a kind of barn and stone-house for agricultural implements, was the seat of the Langtons until the 18th century, when, Edward Langton of Low dying without issue, the estate was inherited in 1733 by a nephew named William Pugh. In 1765 the Low Hall Estate, the Manor of Hindley, a certain reserved rent, and the minerals under Rigby's tenement near Hindley Green, were conveyed for a consideration of £6,650 to the Duke of Bridgewater.
A member of the Langton Family, Ivo (or John) de Langton was admitted Rector of Wigan in 1334; and Richard Langton, who succeeded Nicholas Towneley as Rector in 1532, was the last of his name of whom there were no less than eight, who had held the position.
