The Burial, Act 1853, empowered local vestries to elect burial boards to administer cemeteries and burial grounds. Malpas Burial Board was established in 1873 with the Rev. C.W. Cox as its first chairman. A site for the burial ground in Stonepit field was purchased from the Marquis of Cholmondeley. In 1897, the board was renamed Malpas burial joint committee
