Administrative / biographical background

The Buildings and Finance Sub-Committee was appointed in November 1879 when the Town Hall, the Municipal Buildings and Finance and the Rents Sub-Committees were amalgamated. The main function of the sub-committee was to advise on all financial, rental and building matters, including insurance and staffing, on behalf of the main Estates and Burial Grounds Committee. In January 1880, the committee appointed a Curator of the Council House Buildings. In December 1899, the sub-committee de-merged, resulting in the formation of two new sub-committees that November, the Finance Sub-Committee (see BCC 1/AM/7) and the Works Sub-Committee, which took over the buildings function of its predecessor body (see BCC 1/AM/8).
