Description

Survey volume N1 is the first in the series of three 'N' volumes, which covers the Ecclesiastical Corporations of Hereford, which were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners under mid nineteenth century parliamentary legislation. ; This volume contains surveys carried out on behalf of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by their appointed land agents, Messrs. Cluttons and Messrs. Pickering & Smith. The preferments in this volume include the following: the Hereford Chapter Estates (Pencoyd Parish), transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners by conveyance on 1 December 1852; the Hereford Deanery Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 4 April 1850 by vacancy; the Hereford Precentorship Estates vested in the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 13 February 1855 by vacancy; the Hereford Sub-Treasurership transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 17 September 1857 by vacancy; the Hereford Chancellorship Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 30 June 1861 by vacancy; the Bartonsham Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 16 May 1848 by order in Council; the Bullinghope Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 12 December 1844 by vacancy; the Church Withington Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 20 October 1842 by vacancy; the Gorwall and Overbury Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 17 January 1846 by vacancy; the Huntington Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 9 June 1854 by Order in council; the Preston Wynne Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 23 October 1865 by vacancy; the Putson Major Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 19 May 1865 by Order in Council; and Warham and Aylesstone Prebend Estates transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners on 7 May 1838 by vacancy. ; These surveys were essential to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, as the survey reports gave a comprehensive way of clearly ascertaining the extent, condition and value of the preferments being transferred. ; As preferments were transferred to the Ecclesiastical Commissioners from the Ecclesiastical Corporations, the various holdings of the estates were either kept or sold; the land agents supplied recommendatory advice on this matter with the survey reports. ; The volume also has annotations often regarding the disposal of property since the surveys were originally carried out and therefore incorporates later dates.; The geographical areas covered within the volume includes: the county of Herefordshire, parishes of Allensmore, Aylton, Bishops Frome {Froome], Breinton, Bromyard, Burghill, Church Wichington, Colwall, Eaton Bishop, Grendon Bishop, Hampton Bishop, Hereford St. John the Baptist, Hereford St. Martin, Hereford St. Nicholas, Hereford St. Owen, Holmer, Kingstone, Ledbury, Little Hereford, Madley, Moreton on Lugg, Preston Wynne, Ross, Stanford Bishop, Tupsley, Upper Bullingham, Upton Bishop, Vowchurch, Wacton, Walford, Wellington, Withington and Woolhope; he county of Salop [Shropshire], parish of Ashford Carbonel; the county of Gloucestershire, parishes of Moreton Valence, Prestbury, Ruardean, Sevenhampton and Whaddon; the county of Worcestershire, parish of Inkberrow; the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire, parish of Bockleton.
