Administrative / biographical background

William (Bill) Sutton was born in 1878, and grew up in a Barnardo's home. He first worked in the cycle trade which then led to the motor trade just as it was starting. By 1902/3 he worked with the Farnman Brother in London, and later with Napiers. Sutton served in the Royal Flying Corps as a driver in WW1, and later with the RAF after the merger of the RFC and the RNAS. Before and after this time he served as a driver with various families including the Guinness family. Towards the end of his career with motor cars, he went into partnership and formed the Marble Arch Motor Company of Great Cumberland Mews, providing a limousine service to, among others, the German Embassy.
