Description

The earliest court roll is one for 9 Edward III. (1335), and has been stitched on to other membranes and used on the dorse for part of an extent of 26 Edward III. (1352). There is the record of a court held at Schrinkelyng 34 Edward III., after the feast of St. Dionysius, bishop, possibly the same date as that of Knowlton in CM 32/1. The reign of Richard II. is represented in this collection by courts for Knowlton for the 6th year and for the 14th to the 20th, a period represented in CM 32 by only three courts (CM 32/2) held at Sandown. There are court rolls for Knowlton from 7 to 18 Henry VI., 20 to 22, 32, 33 to 37 Henry VI. Part of this period is covered in CM 32 by court roll CM 32/2, which includes courts held at Sandown, and by court roll CM 32/3, which includes the record of two courts also in CM 34, though with slight differences, shewing that the latter is probably the Steward's rough draft and the former the official enrolment. [The entries in CM 34 are very much abbreviated, and some entries are crossed through. On the CM 32 roll there are not many abbreviations, the order of the entries varies slightly, and none of the crossed-out entries are given. But the copyist made two slips. He misread Wm. [William] Morehay in one place as Wm. Gorehay, and he wrote lxv gallinis vjd. de totis receptis instead of lxvs. vjd.] There is only one court for Sandown during the reign of Edward IV. at Lambeth, but in CM 34 there is a set for Knowlton running from 2 to 8 Edward IV., and a quarto paper book in three sections which covers from 49 Henry VI. to 21 Edward IV. and 1 Richard III., giving the records of courts held also at Schrenkelyng, Sandowne, one at Mergate and one at Mesebarow 'in domo Willelmi Boston, 17 Ed. IV. in tenura Willelmi Langley,' at Tylmaston and at Welle in le blene iuxta Cantuar. [Cf. CM 31/135 It seems probable that the manor referred to there is not Well but Wild Court in St. Stephen's parish, which was once part of the possessions of the At Lese and so came to the Langleys. Cf. Hasted, vol. iii., p. 566.]
