Patrick Dale Wood (1926- ) was an auctioneer with Turner, Rudge and Turner of East Grinstead and founder-chairman of the East Grinstead Historical Society
The map of 1651, listed as AMS6497/1/1, was presented to Mr Wood by a member of the public at an auction in East Grinstead in the late 1950s or early 1960s; almost a century earlier it had been at the office of an East Grinstead solicitor, and in 1868 was referred to by J C Stenning in his article 'Notes on East Grinstead' (SAC 20 139)
The maps of the Saint Hill estate in East Grinstead and West Hoathly, listed as AMS6497/2, are copies from a book of maps in the Maps Department of the British Library, reference C.7e.18(1). They were obtained by Mr Wood in the course of his antiquarian research; copies of the remainder of the maps in the same book relating to parishes other than East Grinstead and West Hoathly have been added, from a microfilm copy (XA 15/5), for the sake of completeness. Some of the maps originally in the volume were cut out when the estates which they depicted were sold. These gaps can be filled, both from another version of the volume at West Sussex Record Office (Add MS 45636) and from a copy of one of the maps among the records of the Hickstead estate (HIC 450-452)
Both maps were in the possession of Mr Wood in 1964, when he produced his 'Descriptive Catalogue of Topographical Maps and Plans ... in the Old Parish of East Grinstead', a copy of which is listed as AMS6497/3. In 1968 they were noticed in F W Steer (ed), 'A Catalogue of Sussex Maps' (SRS 66 7, 19-20)
