Colonel John Wilson Patten (1802-92) was a prominent figure in public life. He was a Member of Parliament from 1820 to 1874, in which latter year he was created Baron Winmarleigh. He held various offices including the Chancellorship of the Duchy of Lancaster, 1867-68, was Secretary of State for Ireland, 1868, a Privy Councillor from 1867 and Colonel of the 3rd. Royal Lancashire Militia. He was connected with the Lancashire families of Bold of Bold, Patten of Bank Hall and Hoghton of Hoghton.
