The new gaol at Maidstone was not completed until 1819, but an outbreak of Typhus at the old gaol in King Street resulted in the transfer of women prisoners following a report made in November 1818. The Dartford Bridewell was closed from Michaelmas 1819, prisoners held on more serious charges being transferred to Maidstone under an order of 9 July of that year.
