Photographs by John Henry Ball (1901-1997), of Harvey House, Claremont Road, Seaford

John Henry Ball was a former Baptist minister. The archive contains two postcards addressed to the Rev John Henry Ball at 11 Cherry Orchard Road, Bromley, Kent (AMS 6797/5/5/3-4), which was the home of the pastor of Bromley Common Baptist church; he is listed there in local directories for 1928-1930. Ball's father was also in the church, and is thought to have died in the pulpit at Lancing; some of the postcards in this archive show the Lancing area (AMS 6797/5/2). John Henry Ball may also have lived near Shoreham for a short while, because a number of photographs were taken in that area around 1932 (AMS 6797/4/1).

In 1933 John Henry Ball married Audrey Chatell Hepher in the Thrapston district of Northamptonshire (second quarter, 3b 579), and shortly after the marriage the couple ran a guest house at Harvey House, Claremont Road, Seaford. Ball also worked as a professional photographer, initially from Harvey House, but he also had premises at 32 Church Street, Seaford, from around 1938. The couple do not appear in voters' lists after the Second World War, and it seems likely that they left Seaford soon after hostilities commenced. Ball died in Suffolk in 1997.
