Woods and Plantations appear as a separate category in the account books from the 1730s. From 1816 the Woods Account appears in the Audit Books. In the 1940s the Woods Department employed 16 woodmen under the head forester; its responsibilities included 3200 acres of woods (including 350 acres at Fulmodestone and Tittleshall), 16 miles of private roads, some marsh drains, the estate nursery, and the Holkham deer park.
