Description

Akbar enthroned. Oudh, c.1770-80. Richard Johnson Collection. Purchased 1807. Tinted drawing with gold; on an album leaf with mauve outer margins. 229 by 149 mm; page 379 by 254 mm. Reverse: a quatrain written diagonally in 'nasta'liq' calligraphy by Ghulam Rasul; dated year 29 (perhaps for AH1129/AD1717). Akbar with a radiant gold halo, sits on a hexagonal throne upon a terrace, caressing a hawk perched on the pink gauntlet of his right hand; coloured sky behind.
