Administrative / biographical background

John Crawford Johnston was born around 1879. Note that for most of his life, he is known as John Crawford and this is his given name on his military records.Crawford was educated at several schools including The Duke of York?s Royal Military School and Queen Victoria School before joining the 2nd Battalion Black Watch in Aldershot on the 15th September 1899. His known army number was 7342.He was promoted to Corporal by May 1903 and Sergeant by June 1907. Most of his service was spent overseas with 8 years in India:1899 - 1900: United Kingdom1900 - 1902: South Africa1902 - 1903: United Kingdom1905 - 1914: India1914 - 1915: France (Expeditionary Force)1915 - 1918: Mediterranean (Expeditionary Force)1918 - 1919: EgyptCrawford married Elizabeth McDougall Cameron on the 7th September 1904 in Kinnoull, Perth and is known to have had three sons Robert, Charles and John.
