Description (What the record is about)
-
Correspondence relating to two legal cases regarding Trade Unions prohibiting indiviudals involvement in the Lever Brothers Co-Partnership scheme with threat of expulsion as they felt that membership resulted in bonus on production rather than joint control., which was a violation of Trade Union rules. Both cases ended up in front of the House of Lords and found that no such rules applied and ultimately resulted in a law whereby members expelled from unions for unjust reasons can go to the courts and appeal for re-instatement. The cases are 'Braithwaite, Mitchell & Blackett V Amalgamated Society of Carpenters, Cabitnet Makers and Joiners, Holdsworth and Boston (the chairman and secretary of the joint committee for the Liverpool and Birkenhead district of the National Association of Carpenters and Joiners) and Davies and Gadwallader (the chairman and secretary of the New Ferry Branch of the society' and 'Ashley and Owen V General Union of Operative Carpenters and Joiners, Holdsworth and Boston (the chairman and secretary of the Joint Committee of the Liverpool and Birkenhead District of the National Association of Caroenters and Joiners)
