The Rural Sanitary Authority set up in 1873 under the control of the Guardians of Chipping Sodbury Union was superseded by the Sodbury Rural District Council which was established in 1894.
In 1946 the parishes of Chipping Sodbury and Old Sodbury were amalgamated and the Council became known as Sodbury RDC see DA33/131/1. The local government re-organisation of 1974 resulted in major changes for the southern-most districts of Gloucestershire and the urban area of Bristol. The new county of Avon was created and a new district council to be known as Northavon was formed to encompass the former rural districts of Sodbury, Thornbury and Warmley. For Sodbury RDC records which continued in use after 1974 see DC93. A further period of local government reorganisation in 1996 resulted in the abolition of Avon County Council and the formation of the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire incorporating the former districts of Northavon and Kingswood.
