Founded by Horace Pelham Lee in 1917, when he purchased the engineering firm of Johnson and Smith. The firm made engines for light cars, generators and fire pumps and in 1946 started making fork lift trucks. In the 1950's Coventry Climax achieved an international reputation through into manufacture of motor racing engines, from 1958 to 1965 winning forty Grand Prix races. The firm also made marine engines. It went public in 1951, was acquired by Jaguar Cars Limited in 1963. Jaguar in turn became part of British Leyland. In 1981 Coventry Climax ceased to be part of British Leyland. It is now organised as Climax Holdings Limited which consists of three companies; Climax Trucks Limited, Climax Engines Limited and Climax Parts and Services Limited.
