Description

Thomas Lloyd, gent., and Roger Comberbach, gent., and the survivor of them were elected Town Clerks (ZA/B/3/199) and Clerks of the Pentice and of the courts of Crownmote, Portmote, Sessions of the Peace, the Pentice Court and County Court and County Court, with all fees, profits, duties and perquisites appertaining thereto. As Roger Comberbach was under the age of twenty-one (ie. about nineteen years), it was granted that the said office should be exercised by Thomas Lloyd, on behalf of himself and of Roger Comberbach, until Roger should attain the age of twenty-one. Afterwards it should be exercised by Lloyd and Comberbach and the survivor of them. In case Comberbach should become such a survivor while still under age, the office might be exercised during his minority by his deputy, approved by the Mayor, Aldermen and Common Council. It was ordered that this election should be humbly represented to the Queen under the Common Seal in order to obtain her approbation.

(ZA/B/3/199v) After reading the petition of Edward Davies, tailor, and a certificate from the major part of the Company of Tailors, it was ordered that Davies should be admitted to the freedom on payment of £10 within a month.

A petition was read from George Johnson, glasier, stating that he was entitled to the Bowling Green house below St. John's churchyard, near the river, and that at the upper corner thereof there was a small waste hole of puddle water which was very dangerous to passengers. He asked for a grant of it in fee-farm. It was ordered that Alderman Edward Partington, Alderman Thomas Partington, Alderman Stringer and Alderman Sayer should immediately view the premises and report. They being returned (sitting the House) made their report, whereupon it was ordered that the said premises should be granted to George Johnson in fee-farm gratis.

Thomas Tagg, gent., stated that he had taken the shop in the holding of John Finchatt, barber, in the Bridge Street. As it was too narrow and straight for him to follow his business in, he prayed leave to enlarge it by taking an addition of 1 yard 3 inches out of the Row or stall adjoining. It was ordered that the same Aldermen should immediately view the premises and report. They being returned (sitting the House) made their report, whereupon it was ordered that Tagg might have liberty desired gratis.

Time was given until the next Assembly for searching for an order supposed to be made against granting leases for longer than three lives or twenty-one years, (ZA/B/3/200) for making the reports on the petitions of Thomas Duke and Samuel Dannald, and for appointing convenient places for stacking gorse.

It was ordered that the Treasurers should be allowed to spend any sum not exceeding £20 at the Pentice on the day of the proclamation of the expected peace, and the like sum on the day of thanksgiving for the peace.

The Mayor, Recorder, Justices of the Peace, Aldermen and Sheriffs Peers were to inquire what fees ought to be taken by the Clerk of the Pentice. Within the next three months, the Mayor was to appoint a convenient time for that purpose, and all the members of the Common Council were to be admitted at the meeting.
