What is this page?
You are looking at the catalogue for documents held at The National Archives, the official archive of the UK government. We're home to millions of historical and recent UK government documents, known as records. Our catalogue also lists items held at other archives across the UK.
As an archive, our role is to collect, preserve and make the records we hold available to the public.
What we hold
Our archival collection is one of the largest in the world. From Domesday Book to modern government papers and digital files, our collection includes paper and parchment, digital records and websites, photographs, posters, maps, drawings and paintings. Our collection continues to grow each year.
The catalogue
The catalogue is a digital index of the records we hold. Each record is represented by a description page that provides information about it. Whether you are a member of the public, a researcher, or a student, you can use the catalogue to search and find records you might be interested in.
How to see our records
The catalogue shows descriptions of records, not the record itself. Each record’s description page will detail how you can see it. Around 7% of our records can be seen online or downloaded. Others are only available to be seen in person at our reading rooms in London, where everyone is welcome.
