Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Correspondence from Government offices (departments), other organisations, and individuals relating to the West Indies. Correspondents and subjects are as follows: [1871] Offices:

  • House of Commons (question over promised consolidation of several small island commands under general governorships; appropriation of taxes for ecclesiastical purposes and establishment of religious equality);
  • Admiralty (reference to visits of ships to West Indies, under order of vice-admiral in command on the North American station);
  • Treasury (pension application of Mr Sawkins; payments from R J Cust for commissions on sales and fees; letter from West Indian Encumbered Estates Commissioners applying for West Indian Encumbered Estates Act to be included in the schedule of the Expiring Laws Continuance Act; letter from senior member of West Indian Encumbered Estates Commission relating to cessation of the court);
  • Foreign Office (extract from Journal Officiel announcing appointments of governors of Martinique and of the French establishments in India; extract from Journal Officiel announcing that Pointe à Pitre has been destroyed by fire; despatch from minister at Copenhagen referring to proposal to exempt islands of St Thomas and St Johns from contributions to the state in consequence of the recent hurricane);
  • West Indian Encumbered Estates Commission (schedules of salaries; account of incidental expenses of the commission; statements of the commissioners on sales and of the fees on proceedings; payments made for commissions and fees; expresses regret that West Indian Encumbered Estates Act is not included in the schedule of the Expiring Laws Continuance Act; maintenance of the commission; urgent request for commission to be continued for three years; reference to sums apportioned on different islands);
  • General Post Office (detention of mail packet called Elle; timetable of the West India Mail Packet Service for 1872 [not in item]);
  • West India Committee (work of the West Indian Encumbered Estates Commission).

  • West Indian Encumbered Estates Commission (schedules of salaries; account of incidental expenses of the commission; continuance of commission; effects of closing the commission courts; continuance of the commission; contribution towards the cost of the commission court; memorandum on the commission court; statement of amount received by the commissioners for commissions and fees on proceedings;
  • University of London (Gilchrist scholarship- asks if there are to be any examination papers from Jamaica);
  • General Post Office (amended timetable of the West India Mail Packet Service for 1872).
