Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Offices and Individuals. Letters from various government offices (departments), other organisations and individuals relating to the West Indies. Correspondents and subjects include: Offices:

  • House of Commons (funds for ecclesiastical purposes);
  • Treasury (payments from R J Cust for commissions on sales and fees relating to West Indian Encumbered Estates Commission; memorials from merchants, planters and others interested in West Indies colonies on rates of postage; requests reminder to be given to the West Indian Encumbered Estates Commission that there can be no change in imperial estimates or revenue after close of next financial year; reference to estimated expenditure of West Indian Encumbered Estates Commission;
  • Foreign Office (Brazilian decree relating to making public a convention agreed in May 1864 between Brazil, France, Haiti, Italy, and Portugal and in May 1865 with Denmark regarding telegraphic lines; United States president's message relating to treaty for annexation of Republic of St Domingo; Argentine immigration [with various enclosures in Spanish and English);
  • West Indian Encumbered Estates Commission (letter from Rochfort Clarke relating to purchase of Swanswick Estate in Jamaica; statements of the commissioners on sales and on the fees on court proceedings; account of incidental expenses of the commissioners; schedules of salaries; payments made for commissioners and fees; state of the Commission; authority of the Commission; estimate of amount required to defray the expenses of the West Indian Encumbered Estates Commission for year ending 31 March 1872);
  • West India Committee (meeting of planters and merchants relating to West Indian Encumbered Estates court);
  • General Post Office (timetable of the West India Mail Packet Service for 1871).

  • Christina Schuppert (letter asking for help in tracing her grand-uncle John Wolf, native of Germany who fled to India during Napoleon I's occupation of Hesse);
