Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Correspondence relating to the migration of Chinese labourers to the West Indies. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Colonial Land and Emigration Office (results of their enquiries on the subject of labour migration from China, report on bounty, passages, contracts etc, objection to Mr Colquhoun's proposal regarding Government payment of expenses of importers, answer to Mr Davis's objections that the bounty of $65 will not pay for the cost of importation, present method of importing labourers, printed 'Colonisation Circular' issued by the Colonial Land and Emigration Commissioners);
  • West India Committee and agents (memorial of merchants and planters for the removal of restrictions, remarks on emigration of Chinese with various enclosures including form of agreement of engagement, urges immediate removal of restrictions because of extreme shortage of labourers, draft of proposed Order in Council allowing contracts and draft agreements, remarks on emigration [two letters], suggestions on contracts and passage money etc, seeks government aid in view of shortage of labourers, urges removal of restrictions [with 'abstract of evidence relative to the possibility of encouraging a successful emigration from the West Coast of Africa to the West India Colonies'], further on removal of restrictions, published 'Treatise on Chinese Labourers as compared with Europeans, the tribes of Africa, and the various castes of Asiatics' by Captain Wildey);
  • Liverpool Association (petition from merchants for the removal of restrictions, thanks for communication, papers will be laid before the Association);
  • Dublin Association (extreme shortage of labourers in the colonies);
  • G Anderson (applies to introduce 500 Chinese into Demerara);
  • Henry Barkly (applies for licence to convey 250 labourers from British settlements in the Straits of Malacca to British Guiana);
  • Bosanquet & Naghten (applies for licence to convey 250 labourers to Berbice);
  • Henry I Bradfield (comments on previous Chinese labour emigration to Trinidad);
  • Cavan & Company (applies for licence to convey 400 labourers to British Guiana, applies for licence to convey 250 labourers to Berbice, requests duplicate licences, applies for licence to convey 250 labourers to British Guiana);
  • Reed, Irving & Company (applies for licence to convey 300 labourers to Trinidad);
  • W Davis (memorandum on emigration from Asia to Jamaica, application from Mr Neill Malcolm to introduce emigrants, concerning bounty rules, hopes any alterations will be promulgated, further on bounty);
  • George Labolmondiere (applies for licence to convey 500 labourers to British Guiana);
  • Toulmin & Company (requests permission to send out vessels, applies for licence to convey 300 labourers to Berbice);
  • Colonial Office (various drafts and memoranda);
  • Various printed papers relating to the emigration of Chinese labourers to the West Indies.
