Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Letters from individuals relating to the West Indies together with correspondence from the Commissioner of Police. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • C Abrams (proposals on silver coinage);
  • Sir W Atkinson (seeks an appointment);
  • D St Andre (documents to forward requesting information);
  • J J Bourne (requests appointment of inspector of prisons for Mr Samuel Bourne);
  • J Burton (memorial from Anti Slavery Society of Nottingham against the slave trade);
  • J Buchanan (relating to emigration to the West Indies and the appointment of emigration agents);
  • O Bourke (requests aid in recovering property at St Croix left to his father by his uncle);
  • J Crawford (copy of memorandum on Crab Island addressed to Lord Minto, state of mercantile affairs);
  • James Carrick (seeks redress of his grievances);
  • Cox & Company (request certificates for governors' pay [seven letters]);
  • W Ewing (seeks appointment as inspector general of prisons);
  • Mr Evans MP (Liberated Africans: papers on intended motion and papers presented etc);
  • Lord Glenelg (sends letter from Mr Stephenson relating to his continuance in the office of the Compensation Commissioners);
  • Lord Granville (introduces Mr Turnbull);
  • W Heath (disposal of 'negroes' captured on board slavers);
  • M Montlahey (requests certificates of deaths of several persons [in French]);
  • P Miles (memorial from Bristol relating to the importation of labourers);

  • Colonial Office (circulars concerning: co-operation with Denmark to prevent escape of fugitive criminals from Danish to British colonies, apprenticeship of liberated Africans not to be allowed, police Acts, measures for the relief of the destitute poor, no longer necessary to send to the Colonial Office details of trials for capital or transportable offences but governors should watch proceedings carefully, militia [two circulars], no longer necessary to send to the Colonial Office quarterly returns of convictions at the Quarter Sessions, Parliamentary grant for 'negro education', copy of Treasury minute concerning claims by owners of US slavers, restitution of fugitive slaves as criminals, Admiralty instructions concerning slavers flying the Portuguese flag, return of exports).
