Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments) on matters relating to the West Indies. Continued from CO 318/132. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Foreign Office (right of British subjects to fish on coast of Cuba, letter from the Danish minister relating to the escape of Danish slaves to the English settlements, draft of 'treaty of amity commerce and navigation between Great Britain and Hayti [Haiti]', reports that vessel has arrived at Rio de Janeiro with 238 German settlers, disposal of Africans found on board the Portuguese schooner Florida, report of the case of the Portuguese brig Don Francisco condemned at Sierra Leone, slave trade treaty between France and the Hans[e] Towns, additional article for slave trade treaty between Great Britain and the Netherlands, slave trade treaty between France and Tuscany, Captain Fair's suggestions respecting the repression of the slave trade, forwards additional copies of slave trade treaties described above [not in item], US proposal for negotiation of a 'conventional arrangement' to provide for the disposal of US slaves shipwrecked in the vicinity of the British colonies, slavers sailing under Portuguese flag, copy of despatch from British commissioner at Rio de Janeiro on the slave trade, draft of treaty with Haiti, enquires where Lord Glenelg wishes to appoint consuls, proclamation recommended by Captain Fair for the purpose of assisting in the suppression of the slave trade, agrees to alterations in Haiti treaty);
  • Home Office (Poor Law Commissioners and Commissioners of the Metropolitan Police have been instructed to communicate with Lord Glenelg for purpose described in letter of 21 September [subject not given]);
  • Law Officers (returns slavery abolition act with observations, reply to enquiry whether certain apprentices should be classed as praedials or non-praedials, report on bill for marriages and reputed marriages and for other purposes, contract ordinance, vagrancy ordinance, lands ordinance, on power to eject slaves from their 'tenements');
  • Treasury (cannot at present give any opinion on the question of currency, claim on account of Africans landed from slave vessels, slave registry office, payment of a bill drawn by Dr Madden for £200, sanctions appointment of chaplain to the Romney, approves purchase of a schooner for reception of sick captured 'negroes' as suggested by Dr Madden, gratuity to stipendiary magistrates on the termination of their appointments, has directed issue of £600 to Captain Manby, colonies should pay part of cost of signal posts, reduction of registrar's establishment, proposed alterations in packet arrangements, approves retention of part of the stipendiary magistracy and grant of passage allowance to those superseded, memorandum on 4½% duties, further on slave registry office, further on proposed new packet arrangements, law officers' opinion that slaves captured in certain vessels cannot be legally apprenticed, instructions for improvement of packet service will be issued [further papers on packet arrangements are bound at the end of the volume], coinage required for Montserrat, Captain Pringle's claim for £128 5s 4d directed to be paid, asks how long the employment of the compensation commissioners is to continue, instructions have been sent to the various commissariat officers relating to the passage allowance for stipendiary magistrates, further on continuing period of service of compensation commissioners, payment of expenses of Slave Registration Office).
Volume also contains miscellaneous papers on currency including printed memoranda numbers 1 and 2, and printed copy of the 'Second Report on the West Indian Currency in further pursuance of the minute of the Lords of the Treasury dated 22 September 1837'.
