Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: The decision of the British Parliament to make funds available for 'Negro Education' initiated a considerable amount of correspondence from various religious societies, etc, to the Colonial Office. This volume includes correspondence from:

  • Mico Charity (request for list of appropriation of the Parliamentary grant in Jamaica, Reverend Mr Trew about to proceed to Trinidad, thanks for introduction for Mr Trew, thanks for assurance of co-operation of Mr Le Brun, ordnance officers to afford trustees every assistance, requests appointment of an auditor of accounts, letters introducing inspectors of schools, will undertake management of school at Nassau as proposed, relative to wish of Messrs Clark and Ollivier to preach interfering with their duties as school masters, application for £14,000 from Parliamentary grant, return of schools and expenditure, acknowledges receipt of despatches copies of which have been circulated among the trustees, will include St Vincent and Grenada in their general scheme, further on request for grant of £14,000, school at Grand Port Mauritius, Parliamentary grant, ministerial duties exercised by their ministers at Mauritius, salary of Mr McSwiney, acknowledges receipt of St Lucia despatch on education, passages for teachers, returns Antigua despatch, acknowledges letter and extracts of reports on education at Jamaica, acknowledges letter respecting completion of the Bahamas Normal School, deficient means of education in Grenada for Roman Catholics);
  • Society for the Propagation of the Gospel (cause of delay in building school at Nassau, list of clergymen receiving a portion of their salaries from the society, St Georges School at Grenada, list of school houses proposed to be built in the diocese of Barbados, cause of delay in erecting school houses at St Georges Grenada, substitution of school houses in various parts of the diocese of Barbados for infant schools at Antigua, use of £600 allowed to the society from the Parliamentary grant 1837);
  • Church Missionary Society (letters introducing inspectors of schools to their agents etc, appropriation of £2,500 granted them, will not apply this year for assistance towards building but request £1,500 for school masters etc, still unable to supply information as to appropriation of grants, cause of delay in erection of schools, requests an interview, requests co-operation of the local Government in establishing schools in Maroon towns, asks when £1,000 will be received);
  • Wesleyan Missionary Society (letters introducing inspectors of schools to their agents etc, appropriation of Parliamentary grant, report of proceedings, will send account of appropriation of £700 granted, education in Dominica);
  • London Missionary Society (list of schools will be sent, letters of introduction for Mr Latrobe [La Trobe], requests an interview, schedule of schools to be erected, requests Reverend Mr Jones be furnished with a letter to the governor, requests further aid from Parliamentary grant, statement of proceedings, requests issue of portion of last grant, governor's interference with Reverend Mr Jones's preaching to the 'natives' at Madagascar);
  • Moravian Missionary Society (letters introducing Mr Latrobe [La Trobe] to their agents, will available themselves of offer of a portion of the Parliamentary grant for 1837/8 for erection of school houses, etc, requests an interview, appropriation of grant, accepts terms proposed in letter of 21 August, thanks for compliance with request relating to appropriation of grant);
  • Baptist Missionary Society (thanks for grant for schools at Piedmont and Bethlephil Jamaica, requests aid, requests aid towards building of schools, disposal of part of the grant for 1837, thanks for additional grant of £200);
  • Ladies Negro Education Society (thanks for £150 from Parliamentary grant, accepts grant of £100 for refuge at Fairfield Jamaica on conditions proposed, requests aid for building infant school house at Essequibo, wish of Edinburgh branch to participate in Parliamentary grant, Edinburgh branch involvement in erection of schools, appropriation of the grant, requests further aid towards female refuge at Fairfield Jamaica, Jamaica branch requests aid from Parliamentary grant, requests grant, Mauritius branch regarding school to be built at Mauritius, list of schools for which assistance is required, aid for teachers, appropriation of sum granted, were not aware any other society had applied for funds for the Fairfield Refuge and are ready to give up the £100 granted);
  • British and Foreign Bible Society (thanks for forwarding packages);
  • Home and Colonial Infant School Society (printed copy of their first annual report, further copies to be sent to the colonies);
  • Scottish Missionary Society (list of schools to be built in Jamaica with aid of grant of £1,500, has drawn for £1,500, introduction for Mr Latrobe [La Trobe], appropriation of the grant, respecting the grant).
The volume also contains correspondence from:
  • Board of Ordnance (their officers to give every assistance to the Mico Charity trustees);
  • Treasury (Mr Latrobe's [La Trobe] salary, will pay Mr Arrowsmith's bill for maps, asks if Mr La Trobe's bill for £300 should be paid, two bills drawn by Mr La Trobe);
  • Philip Upton Oke, Royal Naval School, Camberwell (seeks post as school teacher in one of the colonies);
  • John McSwiney, Nassau (difficulties in establishment of the Normal School [copy]);
  • Langushe Banks, Port Louis, Mauritius (states concerning local application for funds that the majority of the inhabitants are not Roman Catholic as claimed);
  • Printed paper giving details of schools of the Liverpool Mechanics Institution;
  • Printed 'Plan for the Establishment of Schools in the New Colony of South Australia';
  • Draft Colonial Office circular announcing intention to apply for a third Parliamentary grant and requesting details of further aid required. With abstract of requisitions from 1836 grant, appropriation of sums voted in 1835 and 1836, additional requirements May 1837, a list of school houses aided by grants of 1835 and 1836, and note of sums promised but not yet paid at November 1837.
