Description

Correspondence, Original - Secretary of State: Correspondence concerning the appointment and work of Charles Joseph La Trobe [or Latrobe] inspector of schools for the West Indian colonies, a post created to carry into effect 'the intentions of Parliament in respect to the appropriation of the grants voted in 1835 and 1836 for Negro Education'. Contents include:

  • Paper describing purpose for which post of inspector of schools created;
  • Correspondence with La Trobe and his brother concerning the appointment;
  • His arrival at Jamaica;
  • Brief reports of his tours of the parishes of Jamaica;
  • Printed copy of his report on 'Negro Education, Jamaica' dated 19 October 1837, with copy of a despatch from Lord Glenelg to Sir Lionel Smith dated 15 January 1838, and copy of a circular letter addressed to the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Church Missionary Society, Wesleyan Missionary Society, Moravian Missionary Society, Baptist Missionary Society, London Missionary Society, Scottish Missionary Society, Ladies' Negro Education Society, and the Trustees of the Mico Charity. [96 pages; published for Parliament];
  • Manuscript copy of the above report on 'negro education'.
