Description

Correspondence from 'offices' (Government departments) and individuals on matters relating to the Commissioners of Legal Enquiry in the West Indies. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • House of Commons (request for instructions issued to commissioners, requests for copies of reports);
  • House of Lords (requests for copies of reports);
  • Admiralty (payment of passage from Bermuda to Halifax at public expense, expense of conveyance of commissioners);
  • James Stephen, legal adviser (power of the commissioners to administer an oath, notes on Mr Dwarris's reports);
  • Treasury (various letters relating to payment of bills, requisition for stationery, donation of £100 to Mrs Maddock, instructions respecting commissioners' accounts, accounts of commissioners, bill for the expense of investigating the case of Lescene and Escoffery, observations on accounts, salaries, office rent and salary of a clerk);
  • Captain William King, HMS Astraea (passage for Mr Coneys [four letters]);
  • Audit Office (commissioners' accounts);
  • J Buchanan, British Consulate, New York (returning letter addressed to Commissioner Henry);
  • Valentine Blake (requesting pension for Mr Coneys' sisters);
  • Mary Coneys (sending letters to be forwarded to her brother);
  • H M Dyer (requests interview to discuss concerns of the late Mr Maddock, requests financial assistance for Maddock's family, returns letter addressed to Maddock, forwards Mrs Maddock's memorial [not in item, sent to Treasury], bill for sum due to Maddock, volumes of the laws of Antigua, further on Mrs Maddock's memorial);
  • Gilbert Forrester (enquiries about Mr Henry);
  • Edward Goulburn (forwarding Mr Dwarris's replies to queries put to him);
  • Elisa Parker (seeking financial assistance for the support of Mr Henry's children);
  • Richard Martin [?] (thanks for appointment of Mr Coneys as a commissioner, Coneys' power of attorney, seeks payment of advances made);
  • Thomas Moody (accounts of the late secretary to the commissioners Richard Clement);
  • Eliza Maddock (seeking assistance following death of her husband);
  • J Monteath (requesting information about a Mr Conway- who is unknown to Colonial Office [two letters]);
  • Anne O'Reilly (her correspondence to Mr Coneys [three letters]);
  • John Springall (seeks death certificate for Henry John Maddock);
  • T Sullivan (letter to be forwarded to Mr Coneys);
  • J Williams (asks when Maddock left England and when he died);
  • Planters and Merchants (memorial hoping that the recommendations of the commissioners will be implemented);
  • Mr Twiss (note of 'principal heads of reform' to be carried into effect);
  • Colonial Office ('observations on the draft of a Bill for altering the constitution of the Governments and Courts of Justice in the West Indies').
