Description

Commissioners of Legal Enquiry in the West Indies. Unnumbered volume containing original documents relating to the commissioners' report on Jamaica. They include: The original examinations of the chief justice, attorney general and public officers of Jamaica, presented as 636 numbered questions and answers under the following heads [not in order, and with some sections not included]:

  • 1, courts in general and the law therein;
  • 2, Supreme Court of Judicature;
  • 3, criminal jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of Judicature;
  • 4, civil jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of Judicature;
  • 5, revenue jurisdiction of the Supreme Court of Judicature;
  • 6, Courts of Appeal and Error;
  • 8, Court of Ordinary;
  • 9, Vice Admiralty Court;
  • 10, Court of Admiralty Sessions;
  • 11, Custodes and Justices of the Peace;
  • 12, Quarter Sessions and Parochial Courts of Common Pleas;
  • 13, Slave Courts;
  • 19, Island Secretary;
  • 20, Provost Marshal;
  • 22, Appeals to the King in Council.
Enclosures to the answers including forms of the governor's dedimus and warrants, a table of fees taken by the island secretary under certain legislation, printed rules of the Court of Error, printed rules of the Supreme Court of Judicature [2 copies]; Answers of William Rodon Bennalls, judge of the Court of Vice Admiralty of Jamaica to questions put by the commissioners; Petitions and other papers relating to cases of complaint referred to the commissioners; Extracts from the Royal Gazette and its supplements, July to August 1824.
