Description

Commissioners of Legal Enquiry in the West Indies, Volume 13, Report on Trinidad, 18 June 1827. Volume contains manuscript copy of the Trinidad report, arranged under the following heads:

  • Laws;
  • Courts in general;
  • Individual courts: Court of the Intendant (and of Escheats); Court of Criminal Enquiry; Court of Criminal Trial; Court of First Instance of Civil Jurisdiction; Court of Appeal in Criminal Cases; Courts of Appeal in Civil Cases; Appeals to the King in Council; Court of Audiencia; Court of Admiralty; Complaint Court; Court of the Alcaldes in Ordinary; Alcaldes de Barrio;
  • Officers of Courts;
  • Persons of Colour ['Free Persons of Colour in Trinidad can sue and be sued and labour under no disqualification as regards their evidence. They are tried for Capital or lesser offences as white or other persons are and in the manner prescribed by the Order in Council 16 September 1822'];
  • Slaves ['No other Courts but those for the trial of Criminal offences under the Order of the 16th September 1822 are established in Trinidad for the trial of Slaves'];
  • Complaints relating to the administration of justice;
