Description

Commissioners of Legal Inquiry in the West Indies, volume 11, correspondence from Commissioners Henry, Coneys and Dwarris, and from the Commission's secretary, Henry Hill, on a range of mainly administrative matters but including the following: Case of certain persons at Honduras who claim to be entitled to their freedom on the ground of Indian descent, with the following papers:

  • manuscript copy of the commissioners' report on the case [46 pages];
  • manuscript copy of 'An Act for recovering and extending the trade with the Indian Tribes and preventing for the future some evil practices formerly committed in that trade', 1776 [6 pages];
  • printed copy of 'The Defence of the Settlers of Honduras against the unjust and unfounded representations of Colonel George Arthur late superintendent of that settlement', 1824 [101 pages];
  • manuscript copy of 'Report of the Commissioners appointed to investigate the claims of reputed Indians and their Descendants at Honduras', 1822 [19 pages];
  • schedule of 'all Indians who have proved their descent' giving names of 83 petitioners with gender, age, name of proprietor, names of persons under whom they were brought from the Mosquito Coast, and names of 'native Indians' from whom descended [with schedules of other claimants whose descent was not proved];
  • list of 'Indian' claimants and their owners;
  • related correspondence and papers.
Manuscript copy of 'Report of the Commissioner of Inquiry on the subject of titles to lands in the island of Trinidad', 10 April 1827 [210 pages], with printed copy of appendices giving details of 45 individual cases and copies of relevant documents, many translated from Spanish [177 pages]. Printed copy of extract from the Jamaica Report on civil justice relating to the Court of Chancery [10 pages]. Papers relating to a tariff for the Vice Admiralty Courts in the colonies.
