Administrative / biographical background

The General Purposes Committee consisted of the Chairman and Vice-Chairman of the Board.

The Executive Committee was set up by section 19 of The Milk Marketing Scheme (Approval) Order (England and Wales) 1933.

The Disciplinary Committee was established by the Milk Marketing Scheme (Amendment) Order 1950 section 71 - though the Board had dealt with infringement cases from its inception. The Disciplinary Committee, with an independent chairman, dealt with infringements of the Scheme by producers.

The Hearings Committee dealt with appeals by producers against unjust treatment by the executive.

Regional Committees were set up under sections 28-37 of the Milk Marketing Scheme (Approval) Order (England and Wales) 1933. They were elected by producers and regional Board members were also ex-officio members. They were not decision-making bodies, but could pass resolutions to be placed before the Board.

The Joint Committee was estabished by the Milk Marketing Scheme (Amendment) Order 1955 section 66 and consisted of members appointed by the Board and representatives of the buyers (at first, the Central Milk Distributive Committee).
