Description

Correspondence from the Foreign Office dated July to December 1904 on matters relating to Trinidad, together with correspondence from other 'offices' (Government Departments and other organisations) sent during the year. Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Foreign Office (treatment of the New York and Bermudez Asphalt Company by Venezuela, affairs in Venezuela, Venezuelan surtax, claim of the late Mr T Wilson against Venezuela, opening of Venezuelan ports to trade, claim of Mrs Clara A Matthieu against the Government of Venezuela, anti-foreign attitude of General Castro of Venezuela, Patos Island, claim of the New Island Lake Asphalt Company against the Venezuelan Government, Venezuela prints, seizure of the schooner Alemania, post of Assistant Emigration Agent at Calcutta, trade of Venezuela with Curaçao, claim of Sebastian Cipriani against Venezuela, trade of Venezuela with Colombia, claim of Mr A Pierre against Venezuela, alleged ill treatment of British subjects at Guanoco by the Venezuelan Government, Venezuelan revolutionaries in Trinidad, Venezuelan duties against the West Indies);
  • Admiralty (oil production and oil concession, petroleum industry, Admiralty Property Ordinance, wireless telegraphy, case of James Hugh Welsford versus John Hay);
  • Crown Agents (case of the Attorney General versus New Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company, post of First Assistant to the Superintendent of Nurses at the Colonial Hospital, supply of steamer to the Colonial Government, wireless telegraphy, members of Royal Irish Constabulary appointed to the Police Force, case of Mr J F A Redhead, post of Head Male Attendant of the Lunatic Asylum, arrangements for the reception into an asylum in Ireland of James Giblan, Savings Bank investments);
  • Emigration Agent (indentured labourers for Trinidad and Mauritius, expenses of the acquisition of Agency premises by Port Commission, post of Assistant Emigration Agent, recruiting of Indian immigrants, dearth of recruits);
  • Privy Council Office (New Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company);
  • Home Office (Mining Inspector, pension of Charles Bizzell, proposed loan of the services of Mr J Cadman);
  • India Office (Emigration Agency premises);
  • Board of Trade (Fire Insurance Company Ordinance);
  • Treasury (Imperial pension to Mr J A Bulmer, note issue of the Union Bank of Halifax, regulations of the Currency Notes Ordinance);
  • War Office (theft from the Coronation Contingent Camp, retention of troops in Trinidad, position as to pension for Sergeant Whitaker, withdrawal of white troops).
