Description

Correspondence from 'Miscellaneous Offices' (Government Departments and other organisations) on matters relating to Trinidad. [Correspondence relating to riots was printed for the Colonial Office (see CO 884/7 and CO 884/8) and for Parliament as Cd. 1661 and Cd. 1662, July 1903, and Cd. 1988, April 1904.] Correspondents and subjects are as follows:

  • Lloyd's (wireless telegraphy);
  • New Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company (pitch digging at La Brea, Trinidad Asphalt Industry Commission, objections to report of commission);
  • Colonial Office (receiver generalship, alleged riot at Trinidad, smallpox/chicken pox in Seychelles 1883-1884, press cuttings relating to riots, riot commission, schedule of despatches between Trinidad and Colonial Office 1900-1903, notes of conference at Colonial Office with New Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company, fees and expenses of riot commissioners and commission secretary);
  • General Post Office (pilfering from letter boxes, postage stamps issued by revolutionary party in possession of Ciudad Bolivar);
  • Ratepayers Association (riots arising from 'oppressive' water legislation, riots commission);
  • Trinidad Chamber of Commerce (riots, riots and water question, riots commission);
  • Direct West India Cable Company Limited (wireless telegraphy);
  • Royal Mail Steam Packet Service (quarantine and mail service);
  • Imperial Institute (request that person appointed as geologist should confer with their director);
  • Privy Council Office (appeal cases relating to Trinidad Asphalt Company and New Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company [covering letter only]);
  • Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew (nomination of Frank Evans as assistant superintendent of Royal Botanic Gardens Trinidad);
  • Riot Commission (defence forces, report into disturbances, remarks on governor's 'inefficient control' over his subordinates [not in item], statement of counsel of Ratepayers' Association, commission's report);
  • Local Government Board (epidemic in colony, smallpox case landed at Falmouth by SS Saba);
  • Colonial Bank (employees serving in local forces);
  • Pearl Fisheries Limited (concession to infect oysters with the Margarita pearl oyster);
