Description

Despatches (November to December 1899) from Sir Hubert Edward Henry Jerningham, governor of Trinidad, or in his absence the acting governor, together with correspondence from Parliament, the Crown Agents and Emigration Agents, the Privy Council Office, the Board of Trade and the India Office on subjects relating to Trinidad sent during the course of the year. Despatches are described at item level; correspondence from government departments is not.

  • Parliament (question concerning that part of the cost of supplying cheap labour to the sugar planters which is borne by the Governments of Trinidad and British Guiana and which amounts to a virtual bounty; question concerning the imposition by the Legislative Council of Trinidad of a surtax of 10 percent on imports from countries granting bounties on sugar);
  • Crown Agents (accounts of Tobago; harbour works; New Trinidad Lake Asphalt Company Limited; sewerage works and Mr Osbert Chadwick's observations on draft Ordinance; forwards report of Mr Osbert Chadwick on the draft Water Works Ordinance, draft provisional order for Arima Water Works; disposal of obsolete stamps and postcards; dredging of Port of Spain harbour; maintenance of returning Indian migrants at Port of Spain depot; telegraphic communication between Trinidad and Tobago; qualifications of Mr W Sneddon for post of Inspector of Electrical Works; District Water Works Ordinance; report on pitch specimens; suggests Mr Frank Ward for post of Superintendent Sergeant Instructor of Police; reports that immigrant ship Bann has gone aground; report of Sir W H Preece on present condition of wireless telegraphy; hospital accommodation on immigrant ship Bann; electric communication between Chacachacare and Port of Spain; further reports against use of steamers instead of sailing vessels for conveyance of Indian migrants);
