Description

Letters from various government offices (departments) most of which relate to the despatches sent from the governor in CO 295/384 - CO 295/388. Correspondents and subjects covered are as follows:

  • Crown Agents (misprinted stamps, transport of cattle from India and Sri Lanka, Port of Spain water and sewage works, Crown Agents remuneration, governor's statements, debentures, conveyance of Indian Immigrants, railway extensions, water supply debt, steam service, light at Diamond Rock, reports on sewage works, scholarships, assistant traffic manager candidate, Widows and Orphans Fund, Sewerage Draft Ordinance report, water works extension, Arima water works report, Detective Department sergeant superintendent, leave request, passage for Mrs Morcom);
  • Emigration Agency Calcutta (Indian Immigrants, plague in Calcutta, return passages, printed copy of a service agreement form for intending Indian Emigrants [written in English, Hindi and Urdu], amalgamation of agencies, difficulty in securing agency premises);
  • Board of Trade (sale of cocoa mixed with starch and sugar);
  • India Office (use of steam ships to convey Indian Immigrants, drinking water on emigrant vessels);
  • Foreign Office (mail transit charges due by Venezuela, Venezuelan differential duties on West Indian imports, parcel post agreement with the United States, small pox at Puerto Cabello in Venezuela, illegal action of Venezuelan war and revenue vessels, publication of Mr Hoggard's despatch from Caracas, date palm suckers from Algeria, tonnage tax, D Casey's application for a Sudan Police appointment);
  • War Office (re-armament of forces with Martini-Enfield rifles and carbines, disapproves granting Sir F C Scott the local rank of Major General, Police Force officer's local rank, local rank of Colonel A Man, eligibly of French subject Louis Bert de Lamarre for a commission in the local cavalry force).
